How to Add or Remove Page Break in LibreOffice Writer

This beginner’s tutorial guides you through the steps for adding or removing page breaks in a text document in LibreOffice Writer.

Page breaks are a feature that allows you to separate the content of a document into distinct pages, giving you control over the page layout and ensuring that your content fits properly on each page.

This is particularly useful for writing longer documents such as reports, theses, and research papers, where you may need to manually specify where a page should end and start in order to divide the text into the desired number of pages.

Types of Page Breaks in LibreOffice Writer

In LibreOffice Writer, there are three types of page breaks you can use.

  • Simple Page Break: This is the most commonly used page break in LibreOffice Writer; it’s used to mark the point where one page should end and a new page begin.
  • Column Break: This type of page break is used when you want to divide a document into columns without losing the formatting of your document.
  • Text Wrapping Break (Line Break): This type of page break is used when your content wrapping around a picture.

Note: To insert a column break or a text wrapping break, follow the same steps as for inserting a simple page break, but select the Column Break or Line Break options, respectively.

How to Insert Page Breaks in LibreOffice Writer

You can add a page break in a document through two different methods.

  • Using the keyboard shortcut (the most popular).
  • Using the Insert tab (if you’ve enabled the Tabbed UI) or from the top menu-bar under the Insert section.

Insert a Page Break using Keyboard Shortcut

Step 1. Place your cursor where you want the page break to be inserted.

Step 2. Press the keyboard shortcut CTRL + Enter. This will immediately insert a page break at the cursor’s location, and the content of the document will move to the next page.

Insert a Page Break through the Insert Tab

Step 1. Place your cursor where you want the page break to be inserted.

Step 2. In the Insert section of the top menu bar, click Page Break. If you’re in a Tabbed UI and cannot access the menu bar, go to the Insert tab in the ribbon and select Page Break.

Once added the page break, the content of the document should move to the next page.

Insert a Page Break through the Layout Tab

Step 1. Place your cursor where you want to insert the break, and go to the Layout tab in the ribbon.

Step 2. In the Page Setup group, click Page Break. The content after the page break should now be moved to the next page in your document.

How to Delete a Page Break in LibreOffice Writer

  • Right-click on the page break.
  • Wait for a title toast dialog to appear.
  • Click on it.
  • Select Delete Page Break.

The Page Break should now have been removed from the document.
